Everything, everywhere, all at once.
This phrase is not mine but from António Guterres, Secretary-General of United Nations. It highlights the urgency situation that the world is in the fight against climate change if we want to avoid lots of suffering that this climate change will create in the world. This is why Green Hydrogen needs to be developed now.
Today I would like to remember the case of Steel and recommend you to follow the updates of
To complement her post, I would like to also highlight the social side of the decarbonisation of very old sectors as steel. The picture below shows the case of Asturias, a beautiful region of the North of Spain where steel is crucial for their economy. 19 000 jobs for a population of 1 million is a lot of jobs.
Lots of energy will be necessary to provide all the electricity to decarbonise the steel production in Asturias around 25 TWh, 75 % to produce green hydrogen. This is 25 000 000 000 MWh. Lots of energy.
However, Spain is lucky enough to have both sun and space to install lots of solar panels. 25 TWh would be produce with around 12 GW of solar panels that would occupy a bit less that 250 km2 of surface.
If you know Asturias, you may think that it is not the best region to have plenty of solar panels due to its orography, plenty of mountains and cliffs, but Castilla y Leon, the region in the South and around 100 km away has plenty of land for this solar panels.
The counties in the north of Castilla y Leon and very close of Asturias, Leon and Palencia have 15 000 and 8 000 km2 of extension and very low density populations. Therefore 250 km2 would mean to occupy around 1 % of their surfaces. Other interesting data, Palencia occupies 66 % of the land to agriculture use. Would this 1 % of solar panels ruin the agriculture economy of Palencia? It doesn't seem so...
We know the solutions, we have the technologies, now we need to have the willingness to do it because our kids deserve that we do that effort now.
Happy Easter everyone!!
